2016 Volkswagen Passat Named Best Mid-Size Sedan
As owners of the redesigned 2016 VW Passat can confirm, it delivers an all-around enjoyable driving experience, with its impressive performance, upscale and roomy interior and innovative technology features. Put to the test against eight of the most popular 2016 models, the Passat just earned a win for the Cars.com Midsize Sedan Challenge, further cementing its reputation as a top choice for the midsize sedan segment.
The Best Mid-Size Selection Process
The new Passat won the Cars.com judge’s hearts with its spaciousness, safety, available VW Car-Net App-Connect technology, and most of all, its fun-to-drive nature. To make it into the 2016 Midsize Sedan Challenge, each vehicle had to have an automatic transmission, have an EPA estimate of at least 28 mpg combined and have an MSRP of less than $28,000.
It wasn’t just the team at Cars.com who made this selection; they even sought out the additional experience of MotorWeek to determine the segment leader in their Midsize Sedan Challenge. A panel of experts met with a local Atlanta couple looking for a new sedan, then put the following popular vehicles through their paces:
2016 Chevrolet Malibu
2016 Hyundai Sonata
2016 Honda Accord
2016 Kia Optima
2016 Toyota Camry
2016 Volkswagen Passat
2016 Subaru Legacy
2016 Nissan Altima
“The Passat came in first place with both our expert judges and in-market shoppers. This midsize sedan is a refreshed version of the Passat that won Cars.com’s Best of 2012 award. It’s still tremendously roomy and for 2016 got a ton of tech upgrades like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.”
-Patrick Olsen, Cars.com Editor-in-Chief
Each vehicle was put through a 220-mile course covering diverse road types in order to test real-world mpg ratings and performance. They were also driven back-to-back by each expert in order to gauge acceleration, handling, braking, and other ride features, then tested and inspected by real consumers. In the end, the Passat secured first place with both the expert judges and the in-market shoppers.
What Makes the 2016 VW Passat So Special?
The 2016 Passat wasn’t named Best Midsize Sedan by the people at Cars.com for just one reason; they praised everything from comfort to convenience features. With a 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, it isn’t hard to see why the Passat came in first for peace of mind, and new technologies such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration have helped it appeal to modern drivers.
Beyond this, Cars.com commented that the Passat is “plain old fun to drive.” That’s the case even with the 170 hp, 184 lb-ft of torque 1.8L TSI that comes fitted as standard. With the 3.6L V6 purring under your hood to produce up to 258 lb-ft of torque, your ride will turn into something completely out of the ordinary.
The 2016 Passat, built in Volkswagen’s state-of-the-art factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, combines striking new interior and exterior design elements with a greater variety of available driver assistance, connectivity and convenience features than ever before. Overall, the 2016 Passat features a winning combination of interior and exterior design, technology, available driver assistance systems and a powerful and highly efficient base engine. The starting MSRP for the 2016 Volkswagen Passat is $22,440.
The 2016 Volkswagen Passat Easily Surpasses the Competition
The 2016 Passat’s strong complement of amenities and spectacular dedication to safety and performance have ensured that it reigns supreme at the top of the midsize segment. Everything else is fighting for second place. Test drive a 2016 Passat today at Volkswagen of Athens.
